the Anoa or Gemsbüffel occurs in 2 types on Celebes: the Tiefland-Anoa (Bubalus depressicornis) and the Berg-Anoa (Bubalus quarlesi).
Shape Anoas are the smallest and the most originally the still today living game-cows. The shape is that of a dainty cow verschmälerten skulls with slim, middle-high legs and one to the muzzle to. The short horns are compressed flat, "depressicornis" is called: with compressed horn, and points to the back. Young have a fleecy, tawny fur. Adults possess a shorter red - and dark brown fur as well as at head, neck, torso and legs antelope-good white insignia. Adult animals smell of musk. The shoulder-height of the Anoa amounts to 60-100 cm, its weight 150-300 kg.
Habitat During the Tiefland-Anoa in the swampy valleys lives of Celebes, the Berg-Anoa lives in the moist rain-forests of the highland.
Way of life Anoas live shyly as Kulturflüchter and withdrawn in its badly accessible habitats. One finds it usually in pairs. If the female places a calf, it retreats. The males can become aggressive also opposite the human being, this is applicable particularly to the captivity. Anoas like to go like many Asian buffalos into the water and can itself, dived largely, detains for hours there. The voice of the Anoa, a bleating - that sounds like a moan - is to only rarely be heard.
Reproduction One is informed about the increase of the Anoa in the captivity through observations. The Tragzeit amounts to approximately 295 days. Calves come over to the world the whole year, however the births in March occur increasingly often. A solid heat-time therefore is absolutely impossible. Like all cows, the Anoa-Kuh has 4 teats.
Food Is vegetarian food like grass, swamp and water-plants the main-food of the Gemsbüffels.
Endangering Celebes is deforested to increasing extents, swamps are changed into paddies. The habitat of the Anoas is restricted by it more and more. Although these animals are protected through the Washingtoner Artenschutzübereinkommen, they are poached again and again. Anoas are threatened by the extinction today.
Captivity The Anoas of the zoological gardens are grasped in a breeding-book so that the survival of this smallest cow is guaranteed at least in captivity.
