Babirusa

BabirusaScientific name:
babyrousa

Natural spread:
Celebes

sub the present-day pigs of the old world earns a quite isolated position the Babirusa or the stag-boar (as the literal translation is). The type could assert itself only on Celebes and some neighboring islands.

Shape The Babirusa has a head-torso-length until 110 cm, a tail-length until 30 cm, a withers-height of 80 cm and a weight of 100 kg. It possesses a torso roundish in the cross-section, that rests on slim, high legs. The back is high-curved, the animal appears built over behind. The head has a pointed wedge-form with a small trunk-disk. The sparsely hairy tail doesn't possess any Endquaste. The race of Celebes has a furrowed skin, that seems bare through the low Behaarung. This east of Celebes of lying islands is lived in by subtypes with denser fur. The coloring is a blunt gray. The ears are small and pointed.

Growth of the cuspids Namengebend were the strange cuspids of the boar. The upper jaw-cuspids grow steeply upward at first. With it durchwachsen it the waiter-lip. In the further growth, these "Haderer" form an arc after backwards. The tooth-tops can touch nose-backs and forehead on that occasion or even into the skin can penetrate. It also occurs that the cuspids penetrate again into its own Alveolen (tooth-beds) and describe a full circle consequently. The lower jaw-cuspids also grow upward. they form a flat bow to the back. The cuspids of waiter and lower jaw don't touch each other. they therefore can't anschleifen mutually for itself. The upper cuspids are missing with Bachen, or they grow only few centimeters through the skin of the waiter-lip. Also the lower jaw-cuspids are developed relatively low with the females.

The meaning of the cuspids of the Keilers is unclear. As arms and tools, these structures are possible inappropriate especially since they break off easily. Possibly, they play a role as Drohsignal. From the three pre-cheek-teeth, one can already be lost for a jaw-half with young stag-boars. Otherwise, pre-forecastles and cheek-teeth form an efficient denture, that is able to shatter also hard nuts and peels.

Habitat The stag-boar prefers swamp-forests, water-edges with dense vegetation from Röhricht, mangrove and moist forests of the low mountainsides.

Food Stag-boars don't break up the ground in the type of its relative after food. they hold yourself the pith of the Sagopalmen to fruits, nuts, and at insect-larvae, who find it in moderndem wood.

Way of life Over the life of the stag-boars in the homestead is only little known. they seem as well as, to be active as also at night during the day. Individually or in small packs, they go on food-search. Stag-boars can hatch skillfully through dense plant-growth and can run quite fast. they are excellent swimmers, that go also in the sea and swim as far as to neighboring islands.

The voice of the stag-boars is a lengthened grunt. Furthermore they can also squeal and with the teeth clatter.

Reproduction it brook throws in 5 months after a Tragzeit of good or two, quite rarely three kids. The Frischlinge didn't rove. it brook has teats not only one pair, believed like one earlier but two pairs. it defends their boys 15-20 cm long in the birth very vigorously.

Endangering The fire-clearance of the forests in its habitat destroyed the existence-basis for many stag-boars. Celebes and its neighbor-islands are largely deforested today. The conservation of this strange type of animal is jeopardized with it. it was therefore subordinated the protection by the Washingtoner Artenschutzübereinkommen.
