the Bartenwalen gives the 300-950 from the palate hanging down horn-plates, that Barten, its name. It is this strongly extended, horny palate-strips, that are ordered in two rows at the side, with frayed inside edges. With the smooth-whales, they can become 4,5 m long, with the furrow-whales up to 1 m.

Bartenwale form tooth-installations already from, but with its birth only during its embryonic-development, they are completely toothless.

Nutrition The food of these 6-32 m long whales consists mainly of small cancers (Krill), partially also from wing-snails and small fishings (Brydewal). To the food, Bartenwale swim through swarms of its loot-animals and take large water-quantities with the animals swimming in it into the mouth, whose ground put with the furrow-whales into many pleats and is strongly expansive. Then, the whales close its jaw and press the water with its mighty tongue through the Barten through, at their frayed insides the food like in a Reuse sticks. The bigger lower jaw includes the edges of the upper jaw.

Krill The Krill consists long cancers (Euphausia superba), that live on shingle-algae (Diatomeen) and occur in large numbers in the antarctic waters between 48° and 62° more southern breadths, of 3-6 cm. Here, cold, oxygen-rich surface-waters hit with mineral-is enough, warmer depth-waters from the tropics together, so that there are ideal prerequisites for the development of plankton. In this area, the big Bartenwale were so frequent earlier that the whalers named this area "Whales Larder", the "pantry of the whales."

System Besides the smooth-whales and furrow-whales, also it hears rather "ancient" appearing gray-whale to the Bartenwalen.
