The race goes back to ice age-like and Celtic ponies and Iberian primitive-horses. With Spanish Genetten, that got on the sea-trade route from Galway, later were crossed. The ponies always lived half-wildly in the severe mountain, and moorland-shaft of the old kingdom Connaught (today county Galway) and became as load, and mounts use, there is a regular breeding only since 1923. With the foundation of a breeding-association and the Stutbuches, the breeding was arranged and was lifted qualitatively. About 1950 in-crosses of the thoroughbreds winters and Little Heaven, the Arab's Naseel and the Irish-Draught-Hengste May boy and Skibbereen, since then again pure-breeding. Connemaras and its cross with thoroughbreds are successful sport-horses. Now in the international breeding common guidelines.
