Ducker

DuckerScientific name:
Cephalophinae

Natural spread:
Africa

the Ducker native in Africa divides into the types of the Steppenducker (Sylvicapra) one with only one type, the bush, or Kronenducker (Sylvicapra grimmia), and in which the forest, or Schopfducker (Cephalophus).

Physique Most Ducker gain only hare-size or little more. Only few types become as big as a deer. While the females can lack horns, they always exist with the males and stick out exactly in the height or to the back. Since these horns are not very big, they almost often vanish in the mop of hair, that many Ducker carry on the forehead. Slit-shaped cheek-glands are between eye and nose, that entlangziehen itself below the eyes like dark slice.

Way of life The name Ducker characterizes this subfamily apt, because its members are in the habit of escaping with danger far not or not but making niederzuducken and itself so preferably "invisible" for itself.

All Waldducker live in the densest jungle where they hatch skillfully through the thicket. Only the Kronenducker avoids the dense forest. it prefers the bush-steppes as habitat. Here it lives individually or in pairs and is predominantly in the morning and twilight, but also at night active. We know very little about the life of the Waldducker since it happens largely in the hidden one. The animals live in in pairs solid precincts, occasionally also with a boy. The precinct is defended against invaders by both partners.

Reproduction The Tragzeit amounts to 7-8 months. The bucks rove through the precincts and look for brünstigen females. The partners rub together with the cheek-glands and arrange itself its scent-materials so mutually. In general, 1 young were born.

Food Foliage, herbs, fruits, seeds play a big role; furthermore, also animal food, Z, is picked up. B. Birds, termites, snails.

Endangering Many Waldducker have only small spread-areas so that they react very sensitively to interventions in its restricted habitat. Very rarely and the Jentinkducker (Cephalophus jentinki) is endangered. Also the Abbotducker (Cephalophus spadix) and the Zebraducker (Cephalophus zebra) are regarded as threatened. One doesn't know about many Duckern on the basis of theirs of hid occurrence how frequently they are actual. Others, as the Rotducker (Cephalophus natalensis), the Gelbrückenducker (C). sylvicultor, and the Kronenducker (Sylvicapra grimmia) are not rare in its habitat.
