Fanaloka

FanalokaScientific name:
Fossa fossana

Natural spread:
Madagascar

the Latin generic term "Fossa" often led to mix-ups with the Frettkatze (Fossa), although the Fanaloka with the actual Fossa doesn't draw near relative is.

Shape The Fanaloka is a quite small Schleichkatze with a head-torso-length of 40 cm, the tail measures 20 cm. The head is stretched narrow, slim and long. The animals are gray and possess dark vertical stripes, that dissolve in individual points on the tail-upper side, at necks and backs. The body-side is black spotted, the stomach-side brightly whitish-gray. Those limbs, particularly the rear ones, are extended in the metarsus-area. The Fanaloka is a Zehengänger to strong extent what a swift locomotion enables.

Spread, way of life The Fanaloka occurs only on Madagascar, where it in the rain-forests on the trees, but also at the ground lives. it is active at night and lives from insects, cancers, snails, worms and small vertebrates. We almost don't know anything about the way of life of the Fanaloka. At least, it seems during the reproductive-time to live in pairs.

Endangering The Fanaloka is very rare and endangers in its continuance. it is protected after the Washingtoner Artenschutzübereinkommen.
