Kolkrabe

KolkrabeScientific name:
Corvus corax

Natural spread:
Central Europe

"ravens" is all bigger raven-birds like Z for many people. B. Rooks or fog-crows. The at most 65-67 cm alone big Kolkrabe carries this name rightly in Central Europe, however. Kolkraben are the biggest Singvögel (with exception of the langschwänzigen paradise-birds) although its voice admittedly sounds somewhat rough. From the crows Kolkraben let themselves distinguish through its wedge-shaped tail in the flight, also they like to sail - in contrast to the somewhat smaller crows. By the way, the much more powerful beak offers a good difference.

Reputations Adult Kolkraben stay together in pairs also outside the incubation; when roving around, one hears its loud "Klok-klok" - reputations often for a long time, before one sets eyes on the birds. The reputation-repertoire of the Kolkraben is very versatile; beside crow-good reputations, typical hard and short "Kloks" and similar quieter Balzrufen, they have a lot of quiet reputations, that it line up "chants" with comforts too long, at their disposal.

Spread Originally, Kolkraben were widespread over wide areas of North America and Eurasia; through the continued prosecution of the human being, these magnificent birds are out however in many places wiped today. Since they are very adaptable, Kolkraben live in quite different habitats.

Food Ravens look at both the coast and in the mountains, in forests and in desert-landscapes for various vegetable and animal food. Dead animals, nests and nestlings of other bird-types, insects, fish and other small vertebrates belong to the menu like berries, fruits and Sämereien as well. However, occasional nest-robberies don't prepare any considerable damage with other birds and can still be in Western Europe of existing Kolkraben reason or pretext for the shooting down of the few on no account!

Reproduction The brood-period begins already in February or March. Into the nest, coarser branch-work turns carefully from both partners, branches, earth, grass and moss as well as linked from hair and similar soft materials, with what Kolkraben erect first a strong substructure and then mold the Nistmulde after it.

The nest consists of 4 -6 (3-7) bluish or greenish colored eggs of approximately 5×3 ,3 cm of size, that become erbrütet from the female for 20-21 days exclusively. The male raven creates the feed along in the meantime. Both alto-birds look after the braunbedunten nest-stools very carefully until they leave the eyrie after 5-6 weeks. The Nistplätze of ravens can, lies in contrast to the crows, also at rock-walls and on steep cliffs.

The proverbial "raven-mother" was created through pure prejudice; the brood-care-behavior is in reality with Kolkraben as far as develops only with few birds.

Endangering Kolkraben are on the red list of the endangered types with us and stand under protection.
