the tree-kingfishers or Lieste differs above all through it from the water-kingfishers in its way of life (kingfisher, kingfishers), that they are not tied at the water. they come along in forest and steppe-areas, at which as well Meeresküste and in mangrove-swamps before like at the shores of the rivers.
Types, way of life The biggest and most known representative is the laughing Hans from Australia, that is among the type Jägerlieste (Dacelo). The Baumlieste (type Halcyon) form the largest group. they are far over Africa, Asia, East-India, Australia and the Pacific islands spreads.
The approximately 25 cm big Grünkopfliest (Halcyon chloris) trains approximately 50 geographical races, that differ in smaller deviations in size and color, in its gigantic spread-area. it is to be found in the coasts and mangrove-areas of the red sea as far as after Samoa and to recognize by its notably green-blue back and the white stomach.
it very similar move the Götzenliest (Halcyon sancta) northwards, that nests in the Innern from Australia and New Zealand, in the winter, however, in order to fish before the coasts there. it broods in hollow tree-trunks or drills its nest-walks into sandbanks of the rivers, sometimes also in termite-nests.
Nutrition The Baumlieste lurk motionlessly on loot, on which they plunge into fast flight, like exactly its relatives, who live, of a branch. The loot is taken back to the seat and is shreded before swallowing.
