This especially modest race should go back to the Tundrenpony of the ice age. Later, one suspects an influence of Celtic ponies from southeast-Europe as well as a connection to the Icelandic and Scottish ponies. Already in the Beowulf-Epos (8). Jh.) Scandinavia's light, yellow horses are glorified. The fjord-horse always represented an autonomous type despite its relationship with the then Lyngspferd, the Gudbrandsdaler and the Norske-Pony. Around the middle of the 19. Jh. one tried to improve the race through in-crossing of Gudbrandsdal and thoroughbred-stallions what went wrong. Since 1864, one favors pure-breeding again. The breeder-union Norské Fjordhestlag takes care of the race, that never was very numerous. Denmark and Germany have since 1930 as well as. 1950 increase its continuance and improve and leads a high-quality breeding.
