Pipras

PiprasScientific name:
Pipra

Natural spread:
South America

the Pipras puts the biggest type of the Schnurrvögel with approximately 15 types. To this, Z belongs. B. the Weißkopf-Pipra (Pipra pipra); 11,5 cm of length.

Shape The male wears a white "feather-crown", that takes off shining from the glittering, blue-black body-plumage, at head and necks. The female is colored insignificantly olive. Also with the Goldkopf-Pipra (Pipra erythrocephala); 10 cm of length, that is named in its home (East-Panama southwards until North-Peru and Brazil) Uirapuru distinguishes the sexes for itself in same manner; the head and the "pants" shine (thighs) yellow-orange. Special jewelry-feathers can be to be found in same manner with males and females of a type, if we Z. B. at the near relative Fadenpipra (Teleonema filicauda); 12 cm of length, thinks; the shafts of its tail-feathers are up to 5 cm wire-nicely extended. As the other types, also the Gelbhosen-Pipras (Pipra mentalis) are; 11,5 cm of length, in small troops constantly in movement, about in the foliage of the dense, tropical forests of the southern America after berries and, to look for insects. With these otherwise weak-black birds, the thighs and sub-wing-blankets are mustard-yellow, the waiter-head and the head-sides colored red on the other hand.

Balzverhalten At beginning of the incubation, the males occupy a certain precinct where they place themselves in regard to the show through complicated Balzverhalten so that the females separately living from them are lured. The female selects its sex-partners and lets itself mate with on several "dance-places" in a season of quite different males. The males are reverse polygamous, d. h. they don't arrive any solid pair-relationship and don't offer itself again and again.

Every type of the Schnurrvögel performs courtship display on its manner, and this goes on not noiselessly; in the opposite, because the females lure a multiplicity of tone-remarks into the proximity at first and accompany the whole action.

So the Goldkopf-Pipra sits on its branch, trembles with the tail, ducks and trips at the side excited back and forth. The tail is turned to the female. So, the male can pause a moment in order to throw up then the wings and itself highly aufzurecken. Now, thighs orange get the validity fully the shining, also the mop of hair is resisted. The male also now and then leaves the main-branch and dances around in the additional-branches. Suddenly, it then starts to a short Balzflug, comes back in enormous speed and tries to mate with the female on the branch. If the combination is carried out, the female flies away.

Similar behaviors are to be observed with the Gelbhosen-Pipra. Here, four or five males of a branch try to win the females, however, together. That quite is not rare with the Schnurrvögeln; we know a real community-dance also from representatives of other types, Z. B. with the Blaubrustpipra (Chiroxiphia caudata). These "Chorpipras" know a ranking among the males and dance in completely simultaneous and uniform movements.

Brood Because the males are perform courtship display polygamously and constantly on it, the inconspicuous females must procure the brood-business alone. The incubation is long for the size of the birds with approximately 3 weeks disproportionately. The female feeds the boys with insects and juicy fruits approximately 14 days.
