from these smallest members of the stag-family gives 2 types it:
1. Südpudu (Pudu pudu)) its withers-height amounts to only 34 cm, its weight by 8 kg. The small stag has a rough, dense, brown-black fur and short antlers-skewers; the tail is small, the pre-eye-gland big.
2. Nordpudu (Pudu mephistopheles)) it is with 35 cm of withers-height and a weight of 8-10 kg somewhat mightier than the Südpudu. The antlers-skewers also are short, the ears small and round. The fur-color is bay at the torso, the neck is tawny, the head blackish; the pre-eye-gland is small.
Habitat The Nordpudu lives in the cold high-steppes, that par-Amos from Ecuador and the Punas of Peru, in 3000-4000 m of height. Südpudus live at the Andes-hillsides of Argentina and Chile as far as to the Meeresküste; they live in forests and step on open terrain to the food-search out.
Way of life Over the Nordpudu is only little known. The Südpudu lives in family-associations or in small troops. its changes remind of tunnels in the dense vegetation. Südpudus are active particularly in the morning and evening-hours. They try on the escape to shirk. If they are pursued by dogs, they beat hooks. Pumas, Andes-cats and big owls are its animal enemies.
Reproduction After observations of caught Pudus, the males expel its rivals from the precinct occupied by them. After 210 days of Tragzeit, the female places 1 spotted young. In the age of 3 months, a stag-calf pushes the first button-skewers. With one year, Pudus are sexually mature.
Food Pudus are choosy. Südpudus eat foliage and South-beeches, fuchsias, Berberitzen and other groves. Furthermore, they skin bark. Herbs, fruits and seeds are also picked up.
Endangering Both Pudus are threatened through the increasing destruction of its habitat.
