the Tangaren is not put by many authors to the buntings but into an independent family. Over 200 types form these mold-rich, only on the American mainland and the West Indian islands, group spread. The spread-main focus lies in the tropical region; only 4 types could conquer its habitat north of Mexico. So, also most types are no migratory birds.
Characteristics The small ones until moderate-sized birds are very different in its appearance and in its behavior. Some even sometimes are inconspicuous, other, in both sexes, colored on the other hand very splendidly. While some types are very sociable and roam in assorted swarms with other Tangaren and further small birds in the tops of the tropical jungle, lives very hidden in the thicket of the dry levels or in the restrained mountain-regions of the Andes others. its food will compose also nectar from fruits and insects, that suck Pitpits, for itself on that occasion from the blooms.
Normally the Tangaren build a bowl-shaped nest in a tree or a bush, only the organists and green-organists have closed, spherical nests with lateral entrance.
System 4 type-groups let themselves it distinguish: 1. Schwalbentangaren (Tersinini); 2. Plüschkopftangaren (Catamblyrhynchini); 3. Pitpits (Dacnidini, put to the sugar-birds earlier) and 4. Real Tangaren.
Real Tangaren (Thraupini)) Tangaren were baptized the birds by the Native Americans of the Amazon. The group is so species-rich that an overview lets itself give only heavily. It is the simply built tongue and the conical beak, that one of some hakig of turned top shows, for all together. Here, however, the 4 types of the Feuertangaren (type Piranga), that spend its incubation in North America, are fitting the tropical regions again in the colder season visits. The organists (Euphonia) and the near relatives green-organists (Chlorophonia) are one of the biggest types.
Also the Schillertangaren (type Tangara) are species-richly represented in means and South America. The Schillertangaren are immediately colored in both sexes. The pairs live in duration-marriage and wander through its habitat to second. Both partners take part in the brood-business and can rear 2-3 yearly-broods.
Also with the Blautangaren (type Thraupis), the pairs remain over together the whole year, however, smaller swarms sometimes form. How the name of this 17-19,5 cm long Tangaren lets suspected, the shiny plumage shows blue-sounds predominantly, that are supplemented through active contrast-colors, however, in both sexes. This however quite doesn't apply to all types, if we Z. B. at the olive Palmtangare (Thraupis palmarum) thinks, with it also the coloring of the female deviates.
The Samttangaren (type Ramphocelus); 17-21 cm of length, knows a solid pair-relationship only in the incubation. The males are clear to distinguish from the inconspicuous, brownish females in its satin black or deep-brown plumage. The shining undersides colored, after which one separates the types, is similar with both sexes.
As well, also the Habias (type Habia) are in the undergrowth like the Samttangaren. With other types, they shorten noisily around and attract attention through its rough reputation particularly. To sing against it, only the males can, and that not exactly very melodic. That is not remarkably, because this ability is especially well trained in the whole subfamily; know Z so. B. the Schillertangaren at all no actual chant.
