this is hop representatives of the Racken screws . One distinguishes two subfamilies, that Wiedehopfe and the Baumhopfe.
Spread The subfamily of Wiedehopfe is represented only by one single type, that seems in means and Southern Europe, Africa, to Asia until East-Siberia and Malaya eastward.
The Baumhopfe occur exclusively in Africa with 6 types south from the Sahara.
Brood With the hop, only the female broods. they are cave-breeders, that live mainly from insects.
Stinksekret In the vernacular, it are called hop also "Stinkhähne" or "excrement-grocers." The remark "stinks like a Wiedehopf" still is familiar with us also today, although the birds became rare in means and Western Europe. Erroneously one assumed that it is the nests own bad smell to be led back on it, that the alto and squabs put down its own excrement in the nest. Actually, however, the nest is clean-held very much.
However, a Stinksekret stands approximately one month long the female and the squabs by the disposal, that is stored in a collective-receptacle of the Bürzeldrüse. Approach an aggressor the nest, the birds lever up the backside with the legs and splash it its excrement, mixes with the smelly secretion, goal-oriented contrary to. This "shot" can achieve a reach of 60 cm!
If the boys are fully-fledged, the Bürzeldrüse only isolates an odorless oil.
Endangering The Wiedehopf was caught in Southern Europe in large number earlier in order to use the secretion for the manufacture of "love-troughs." Therefore, it was wiped out fully in Greece, also on Crete. The Wiedehopf is on the red list of the types threatened by the extinction with us today.
