as beak-whales marks 5 types of tooth-whales, Berardius, Tasmacetus, Ziphius, Hyperoodon and Mesoplodon one. Like the Pottwale, beak-whales almost exclusively of Kopffüßern live; also its denture is receded in adaptation at these soft loot-animals (mollusks) until on few teeth in the lower jaw, that often remains hidden in the gum with female animals for life. The jaws are long and narrow; they form more or less keenly of the head of put down muzzles or "beaks ("pointed-muzzle-dolphins")."
Shape Beak-whales become 4,5-13 m long and weigh between 1 and 4,5 t. The flippers are quite small and rounded off; the sickle-shaped back-Finn, it lies behind the body-middle. Baird-Wal (Berardius bairdi)) The Baird-Wal is the biggest representative of the beak-whales.
Shape With a total-length of 9-12 m, the tail-fluke measures 2,5-3 m, that approximately 1 m back-Finn 30 cm and each flipper.
The whole body is brownish colored until black, the underside carries stains occasionally white. Quite steeply, the forehead-part takes off from the muzzle; the lower jaw towers above the upper jaw something and carries 2 teeth on each side. Two Kehlfurchen disappear V-förmig as far as to the middle of the lower jaw.
Way of life Baird-Wale usually live in groups of 20 animals. they can dive deeply and can often remain under water up to 20 minutes. At the surface, the animals rarely remain longer than 5 minutes.
Baird-Wale live in depths of 1000-3000 m of Kalmaren, octopuses, cancer-animals and deep sea-fishing. But also mackerels and sardines belong to its food.
Reproduction Baird-Wale become sexually mature in the age of 3 years and with a length of 10 m. After approximately 17 months of Tragzeit, a 4,5 m long young was born.
Spread, continuance The Baird-Wal is limited on the North-Pacific, where it moderated and sub-arctic water lives in. Going out one assumes from the wide spread and only inferior Bejagung that the Baird-Wal is not threatened directly.

These properly rarely found whales live primarily alone or in small groups of 2-7 animals. they shall 30 minutes and can remain longer immersed. Male animals become sexually mature with 5 m of length while the females when entering probably are the sexually mature somewhat longer. The young were born after 1 years of Tragzeit.
Cuvier-Schnabelwale are quite differently colored; in general head and front-backs look whitish-yellow while the remaining body is colored black. Whitish stains can have distributed over the entire body or only on the stomach-side.
With all beak-whale-types, long scrapes and scars quite frequently exist on the whole body; they probably come from fights of rivaling whale-bulls.
