the North American Baribal is a moderate-sized bear of approximately 1 m of shoulder-height, that an ebony fur, that is loosened up only by the lighter, approximately ocher muzzle, usually shows. Beside this form, the Inselbaribal or silver-bear (Ursus americanus emmonsi) and the cinnamon-bear (U) still step. a. cinnamomum, on. The erstere varies in the coloring of silver-gray over silver-white until blue-black. From the brown-bear (Ursus arctos), however, also the layman can always distinguish it ears at the tops (and doesn't round). The cinnamon-bear is reddish-maroon. The fur of the Baribals consists of long, taut hair, that lies smoothly flat on the body. Because of its fur, that u. a. as material served for the bear-fur-caps of royal guards, and because of its quality, to plunder a field also once, the Baribals were almost brought at the edge of the extermination. Today, however, Baribals are the most frequent bears, and they stand again highly in the American population's favor.

Way of life In the most important thing, these bears owe the opinion-reversal of the people to its appearance in the North American national-parks where they feed themselves trustful from the visitors and let photographed. That not so peacefully the black-bear in truth and good-natured is but a typical big-bear (bears) with all its not well predictable peculiarities, it shows if the feed of the tourists aufgefressen is. Then, it can very clearly ask for more; so, it is advisable in every case to remain also at a meeting with Baribals in a national-park or a "safari" in the car. The Baribal serves itself at attacks of less of the feared hugs, that its cousin, whom Kodiakbär (bears) distinguishes, but it distributes bekrallten paws vehement hits, that killed already some dog and also people, with its middle-long. Broadly, however, the Baribal the most peaceful is among the big-bears, for whom its salvation rather looks in the escape on a tree, to put a fight as itself. Because the black-bear - in contrast to the brown-bear - climbs well and gladly also as adult animal.

Habitat The spread-area of the Baribals exchanges with the season. In the summer, it prefers big forests while it visits the big rivers in the spring in order to sacrifice themselves to the haul. its spread constantly increases recently. This is not only the case through the fundamental attitude-change of the American citizens but runs parallel with the disappearance of the Kodiakbären, whose spread-area overlaps largely with that of the Baribals.

Reproduction Baribals are combined in the months April until July. After a Tragzeit of 7-71/2 months becomes during the winter-silence 1-4 in January-February, usually 2-3 kids born. they weigh in the birth 260-360 g. The hearing-walk opens after 21-29 days and the eyes after 28-38 days. The boys eat its first solid food after 85-110 days. Otherwise, black-bears don't differ in the biology of the other bears.
