the second name of the cow-antelope, Hartebeest, comes from the Boers and what referred to the uncommon endurance of the cow-antelopes when running means so much like "tough cow."

Shape The withers-height of the cow-antelopes amounts to 110-150 cm, its weight fluctuates from 120-220 kg. A long, steeply carried head and a falling away back-line mark the cow-antelopes. Both sexes carry horns somewhat more weakly, that are the females. The horns snapped twice, approximately Z-shaped, from the side seen. The sinuses stick out far in the bone-taps of the horns in.

Spread, habitat Cow-antelopes live in grass-savannas of Africa, that can have existed loosely with groves. Both stony hillsides at the foot of the atlas-mountains and moist valleys belong to it in the upper white Nils' valley. In its spread-area, the cow-antelopes perform in numerous subtypes.

Way of life Cow-antelopes are regarded as sociable. they are found with other antelopes as well as zebras and ostriches together, however, also relaxed associations with Artgenossen form. The herds include several females with its boys and one or several adult bucks. The males construct also bachelor-herds up to 12 bucks. Cow-antelopes wander grazing. Occasionally, they use common excrement-places. While they are on the way during the day, an adult animal usually stands on an elevated point, Z. B. a termite-hill, as a sentry. They come a leader after the escape. The voice sounds like a snort or sneezing.

Lions are the main enemies of the cow-antelopes.

Reproduction The cow-antelope-males form territories, that they mark with the secretion of its pre-eye-glands, in the combination-time. At rival-fights, they settle opposite each other on its wrists and hakeln with the horns. The fights can be had so severely that injuries occur. Herds of females pass through the territories, where verpaart itself the precinct-owner with some of them. After 240 days of Tragzeit, a young is placed. The boys are successors, who often move on with the mother already on the first life-day.

Food Cow-antelopes are grass-gluttons. they can make do without water several days.

Endangering Individual subtypes of the cow-antelope are threatened by the extinction. The East-African subtype, the Kongoni, only is numerous in some areas so that the type is not yet classified as endangered altogether.
