dog-seals

dog-sealsScientific name:
Phocidae

Natural spread:
arctic regions

the dog-seals forms the subordination of the seals (Pinnipedia) with the walruses and the ear-seals among the carnivores together, whom also as "water-carnivores" will compare with the "country-carnivores."

Locomotion From the ear-seals, the dog-seals differ not only in the total absence of the outer ears but also through the education its extremity, that they mark as high-adjusted water-mammals. Those front-limbs are short and hardly touch the ground with some forms. Those rear-limbs are directional to the back and cannot be put under the body. A quadruped running is not possible for the animals for this reason.

The locomotion on the country is with them only a chute or "seals." Becomes on that occasion, if possible that pressed front-limbs at the ground at the side and moved in together the rear-body caterpillar-nicely. Then, they are pressed rear-limbs at the ground and the front-body to the front is hurled. This locomotion-manner is quite arduous. Therefore, the dog-seals cover as only as possible short routes at country, and this also only very slow. This intense adaptation to the life in the water is only surpassed by the sea-cows and whale-animals with the remaining mammals.

Shape About the head, we find long-bristly whiskers on the waiter-lip. A milk-denture doesn't appear with the young. It is admittedly positioned, however faded usually again before the breakthrough. Because all cheek-teeth differ hardly of each other, we don't subdivide it, like otherwise with the mammals usually, in pre-forecastles - and actual cheek-teeth. they are conical pointed and still often possess small additional-tops before and behind the main-top.

The fur of the seals is short and smooth. As far as he is concerned, many representatives of this group became bejagt as far as at the edge of the extinction. The young are endangered almost exclusively whose valuable youth-dress often kills hundred to thousand seals because of one in a colony with sticks and only often deadened them or abhäutet shocked animals with alive body. This way, not only the entire subfamily of the monk-seals was brought at the edge of the extermination but also the European seal (- the still hunt-ful game is).

System One subdivides the dog-seals in 2 subfamilies: 1. The monk and South-seals (Monachinae), to which u. a. Sea-leopard, Weddellrobbe, crab-gluttons, sea-elephants belong, as well as the seals (Phoanae) with the known representatives cone-seal, ringlet-seal, beard-seal, saddle-seal and folding-cap. they live in all seas of the earth and even venture into the tropics with the monk-seals.
