only the smaller members of the glass-perches has such a transparent look like this the aquarianists Chanda and Gynochanda well-known glass-perches of the types. The skin and the musculature of these small, gluttonous robbers are almost completely transparent, equip merely with an easy greenish glimmer. Spinal column, fish bone and the swimming-blister are to be recognized well; the guts-area is shielded against it through a silvery skin.
Asian types The Indian glass-perch (Chanda ranga) becomes approximately 4 cm long in the aquarium. The males carry pretty, blue hesitated back and anus-fins. The biggest transparent type is Chanda wolffi, that reaches 20 cm of length in its home. Only 1954 are discovered and in 1955 were imported Gynochanda filamentosa, that carries in the male sex of strongly extended back-fin-radiations.
All these small glass-perches live in coasts, estuaries and pure freshwater in the Indopazifik and in southeast-Asian and Australian waters.
Although the old type-name of Ambassis "as food translates worthless" meant, these glass-perches are consumed in some areas Südostasiens as food-fish. However, the meat is regarded as fish bone-rich.
American types The long-stretched, rather pike-similar American Snooks have a quite different shape as the high-re-y Chanda-Arten. The biggest and most known representative of these types is the usual Snook (Centropomus undecimalis, until 140 cm long, 23 kg heavy). Because of its size and the very palatable meat, Snooks are popular sport-fish. However, they turn into strongly befisht so that the continuances decline everywhere. The fast-growing Snooks seem at both the Pacific one(s) and at America's Atlantic coast. North, they go as far as to California, south approximately until Rio de Janeiro.
Further usefulness-fish Also valuable food-fish are the Nile-perch (Lates niloticus) from different African rivers (Nile, Niger, Senegal) and the southeast-Asian Lates calcarifer. Both types become long over one meter far, that the first until 100 kg, the second to 200 kg heavy. However, they become befisht so intensively because of its quality that they already very rarely and usually are very small here and there. Especially Lates calcarifer is to be carried off easily if it swims the rivers upward to spawning.
