the horn-raven or Kaffernhornrabe are the biggest of the African rhinoceros-birds with 105 cm of total-length and used with the northern or Sudan-horn-ravens (Bucorvus abyssinicus) very near.
Shape The whole plumage is black, the white Handschwingen are only in the flight to be recognized. On the beak, it carries a big, in front closed horn. The unbefiederte skin at head and neck is shining red with the male, with the female red or blue.
Way of life Horn-ravens are widespread stand-birds locally and occur as far as to the eastern South Africa from Kenya. Usually, the birds hike in pairs or in small families over the ground; they differ from all rhinoceros-birds living other in the trees with it. they live in open terrain and light forests, also the edges of moist grass-levels. Here they look for small vertebrates and insects and become as protected useful animals for the human being, because also snakes and locusts belong to its food.
Reproduction The reproductive-time is introduced by the rain-time. Then, the horn-ravens are very reputation-joyful. they express a series of deep, grunting tones, that remind of lion-roar.
The nest is positioned (preferably monkey-bread-trees, Adansonia digitata) in thick trees. In contrast to the other rhinoceros-birds, the females don't mason themselves in the nest during the incubation. If the two eggs are hatched after one month of the female, the boys must still be fed from the alto-birds approximately nine months. Only after three years, they become sexually mature, they remain the time previously in the family-association.
Also during the incubation, its feed itself looks for the female, therefore it must remain airworthy. The molt can therefore be carried out only step-by-step.
