the horse-antelope is the biggest antelope-type after the Elenantilope and the big kudu. its withers-height amounts to 160 cm, its weight by 275 kg. The powerful torso rests on high legs; the shoulder is higher than the croup. The upright carried neck has a Stehmähne in the neck. The middle-long horns are bent to the back; they are equipped with numerous Querwülsten. One long hair-tuft adorns the big ears notably.
The fur is colored predominantly reddish-yellow-gray. The face is drawn black-and-white. The females are smaller and more weakly built than the males in the whole one.
Habitat The horse-antelopes prefer light savannas in hilly terrain, the most dearly near water.
Way of life The horse-antelopes form young-bull-herds of 2-10 members as well as harem-herds of 3-15 animals, who consist of an alto-bull with cows and its calves. These herds have a distinctive ranking, to which the alto-bull of the Leitkuh leaves the leadership on the way to the trough, to the pasture-reasons and also at the escape.
The males are defense-ready. they fight horn together at horn and settle on that occasion on its wrists. If the alto-bull is defeated a herd, it is expelled and lives as a loner henceforth.
As an enemy, the lion primarily comes, but also the leopard in consideration, that lurks at the water-places.
Reproduction Horse-antelopes place its boys to every season; the Tragzeit amounts to approximately 9-10 months. In a throw, only a calf was born.
Continuance Horse-antelopes perform piled up nowhere. At some places, they already are out wiped or threatens. However its spread-area is so big that the type is not endangered altogether.
