house-goose

house-gooseScientific name:
Anseriformes

Natural spread:
Europe

already in the antiquity was domesticated gray-geese widespread in far Europe and in the Mediterranean-area as pets. Since they are quite modest and spend the winter well also in northern areas, provided one gives them only a wind-protected shelter, house-geese were missing on hardly a farmer-farmstead as a supplier of eggs, feathers and very palatable meat.

However, many different breeding-races didn't originate. Most house-geese are crossbreeds, mainly wild-colored or with more or less big white plumage-areas. "Country-geese", as the Pommerschen geese (purely white or assorted-colored) or the white Emdener geese, become heavy over 10 kg. Toulouser geese - mainly wild-colored - gain even higher weights occasionally.

With all house-geese, the body-proportions of the game-form are lost through the Domestikation; they have partially strong "dewlaps", (distinctive bulges in the stomach-area) short legs as well as shorter necks and beaks. Also the feathers can lose its original form and can go round the bend to curls or strongly can waste away.

That "noodles" of house-geese, the forcible feeding (stuff) with fast fat-making food, is forbidden in Germany today. Also without this animal-torture, geese estimate fat fast with sufficient feed-quantity.

House-geese were stopped freely at meadows and reaped fields earlier. Through the changeover of the agriculture to more efficient economic-methods, however, the goose-attitude went back strongly in the 1960er years. Nowadays, "factories" breed offspring of very much legefreudigen races ("Vielleger") sufficiently along, who then is fattened fast with industrially manufactured feed.

Hump-goose As following of the Schwanengans (Anser cygnoides), hump-geese had been held in Asia as pets for a long time. It is Chinese Züchtungen presumably, that soon itself over India and (in newer time) until extended after Africa and Madagascar. By 1830, the hump-goose was imported also in America, and only at beginning of this century, its attitude spread in Central Europe.

Hump-geese have a very upright walk and at all properly are überzüchtet. In tropical areas they let themselves hold the gray-goose however better than descendants, therefore they are estimated there and are bred in bigger scope.

Reproduction All house-geese are not monogamously alive; in contrast to the game-forms, a "gander" mates with several females without further. The flight-fortune is completely lost through the high weight and the stunted wings and feathers with most house-geese.

Provided one gets its eggs erbrütet or newly slipped squabs artificially, many game-forms of the geese let themselves hold without big effort in captivity; these "pets" become fast tame and one can breed successfully.
