the lion-monkey belongs to the little uniform group of the Tamarine. it lives in the coast-rain-forest Südostbrasiliens in 3 subtypes. In its nutritional and way of life, it resembles the remaining Tamarinen.
Shape Lion-monkeys work because of its beautiful, gold-colored one or reddish überhauchten fur especially attractively, that forms a fashionable cloak about neck and shoulders, so that the enthusiastic report of Buffon from the year 1755 becomes comprehensible: "The soft fur flows around the slim shape like molten gold."
The bare, flesh-colored face becomes through blue as well as. brown eyes enlivened. This elegance is still increased by amazingly extended extremities, with what the fingers are as long as the forearm; the three middle fingers are together interconnected through a skin fold up to the means-joint.
Endangering The lion-monkey seems to be dependent on intact jungle to particular extent. Increasing destructions of its habitat brought it at the edge of the extermination. Beginning of the eighties, the continuance had sunk to less than 500 animals.
In view of this dangerous development, it was begun with a conservation-breeding-program, that was coordinated world-wide, in the United States. Soon, more animals in human-care than in the homestead existed. A part of these lion-monkeys could again-expatriate successfully meanwhile and in a protectorate in Brazil is settled.
The lion-monkey is under the protection with all subtypes through the Washingtoner Artenschutzübereinkommen.
