pond-chickens lives very hidden in it like most Rallen writes poetry, for robbers unapproachable shore-vegetation of standing waters and slowly flowing rivers. they can swim quite well and can dive and only can therefore (also in its anatomy) represent a bandage-limb between the Bläßhühnern on the one hand and this in most outer need of swimming actual Rallen so to speak. As brood-birds, the 31-33 cm are big pond-chickens over whole Europe, Asia, Africa and Madagascar (including the Seychelles, Mauritius, Réunion) as well as spread about the American doubles-continent. Also on the Marianen and on Hawaii, pond-chickens live.

Brood-biology Pond-chickens position its ground-nest in dense Uferbewuchs between grass or Binsenbüscheln, with what both brood-partners out of dead plant-material mold an often quite deep Nistmulde, and move in together the surrounding stalks to a roof over the nest. The extensive nest consists of 5-11 eggs (4,4 x 3,1 cm) normally. The brood-period begins in Central Europe until April, with what pond-chickens can pull up occasionally also 3 yearly-broods in favorable years, in March. After 19-22 days of Bebrütung through both alto-birds, the boys slip. they wear a dense dress from long, black Dunen and leave the nest already after few days. Until the age of 3 weeks, both alto-birds look after its offspring. Young pond-chickens are independently after altogether 5 weeks finally and flew; however, they often stay together even longer period in the family-association.

Way of life Pond-chickens are quite frequent in Central Europe, leads a secluded existence, however, so that one far too frequently doesn't set eyes on it at superficial observation. With intensive contact with the people however - particularly in parks -, pond-chickens become amazingly tame. they live from insects, mollusks and other small invertebrates.
