snow-goat

snow-goatScientific name:
Oreamnos americanus

Natural spread:
North America

the snow-goat has a withers-height of 100 cm and a weight by 130 kg. it resembles more of a chamois than a goat. Through the long, dense and fine-fleecy fur, it appears massive. The back-line clearly falls away from the shoulders. The fur is pure-white. At a Kehlbart and hanging at neck-base, front and hind legs, the hair is extended. Both sexes possess short, bent horns. These are black in the winter, in the summer gray. Pre-eyes and inter-toe-glands are missing, scent-glands exist one pair on the other hand like with the chamois behind the ears. The claws have hard edges and soft soles. These feet are liable on the rocks like suckers.

Habitat The snow-goat occurs in the rock-mountains of Alaska until South Dakota (USA). Above the forest-border, it lives in steep hillsides and rocks. In the summer, it often is at the edge of the melting snow. In the winter, it normally doesn't go down until into the forest-step but seeks protection under overhanging rocks.

Way of life In the summer, the snow-chamois constructs herds up to 6 animals while the troops increase in the winter on 15-20 pieces. Leader is a male mostly. With concerns, the snow-goats flee without rush; they climb into unapproachable areas on that occasion. As long as an area offers food and security sufficiently, they are place-scatters. Occasionally, a puma or bear can become dangerous for them. Stone-eagles now and then grasp a young.

Reproduction In November, the Brunft begins. The bucks fight together by impressing breitseits with high-stretched backs at first. Later, they put in its horns and inflict itself injuries on that occasion. A buck tries to win the females by approaching on it in ducked attitude.

The Tragzeit lasts 165-185 days. A throw consists of 1 or 2 boys. The kids are successors. With 21/2 years, snow-goats are sexually mature.

Food Snow-chamois eat mosses, lichens, grass and foliage; they suppress also the trick-jaw's (Pinus contorta) branches.

Continuance The snow-goat is not yet endangered, but its continuance is retrograde here and there.
